• Using the following procedure to update the controller firmware, be sure to print the configuration page both before and after the update. Comparing pre- and post-update configuration pages allows you to check whether or not the update was successful.
• Download the firmware files to your computer. Then make a folder on a local drive of your computer and save the files there.

• Updating the controller firmware also updates the fax firmware at the same time. You can not update with fax firmware alone. • It takes about three to five minutes to update the firmware.

1. Connect your computer securely to the machine with the USB or network cable that you will be using for the firmware update. Disconnect any other non-essential cables.
2. Print the configuration page. (Printing Reports)
3. Check the machine's firmware version.
4. Double-click the [FwUpdateTool.exe] (Windows) or [Firmware Update Tool] (Mac) icon to launch the firmware update tool. A dialog box with cautionary statements appears.
5. Read the cautionary statements carefully, and then click [OK]. The firmware update tool opens.
6. For a USB connection, click "Firmware Update (USB)" [A]. For a network connection, enter the machine's IP address in "Machine IP address" [B], and then click "Firmware Update (LAN)" [C]. The firmware update starts.
   
7. Check the machine’s operation panel for messages and the update’s current percentage of completion.
8. Wait until the update completion message appears on the machine’s operation panel.
9. Click “Close” [A] to close the update tool. The machine restarts following a firmware update.
10. Wait until the Home screen or "Ready" appears on the machine's operation panel.
11. Print a configuration or maintenance page to check the machine's firmware version.
12. Reconnect the cables as they were before the update.

Caution

• Do not turn off the machine until the update completion message appears on the machine’s operation panel. Otherwise, the controller board will be damaged.
• If the update completion message does not appear, the download failed. Try again. You can also switch from an Ethernet connection to a USB connection and see if that works. If you still cannot download the firmware, it may be necessary to change the engine board and/or the controller board.
• If power failed during the download, try again. If you still cannot download the firmware, it may be necessary to change the engine board and/or the controller board.
